2014 Census ACS Estimates

US Census ACS Estimates Dynamic Graph via D3.js

The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing survey that provides vital data on the United States of America and its people. The data is used to help determine how more than $675 billion in federal and state funds are distributed each year. See About the American Community Survey for more information.

The 2014 ACS 1-year estimate is scatter graphed above. Each circle represents a state. The left and bottom axes are dynamic and update automatically when selected. The graph is created entirely by JavaScript with the D3.js library. The source code is available in my Github D3-challenge repository.

Correlations found:

  • Texas lacks healthcare across income, age, and poverty stats
  • West Virginia and Kentucky have the most smokers. Possibly due to their relatively low incomes
  • District of Columbia has low obesity and high income. Washington fat cats may need a healthier monkier

Enjoy exploring the data! Try each combination of data and be sure to mouse over or tap a circle for the state's details.
